When Cast Iron Sewer Lines Fail in Older Orange County Homes
How cast iron corrodes, what symptoms look like, and how inspection and trenchless repair fit older OC neighborhoods.
Why cast iron fails
Cast iron sewer lines were common in Orange County homes built before the 1970s. Over decades, interior corrosion and scale reduce capacity. The bottom of the pipe can corrode while the top looks intact on a quick visual check.
Repeated backups, slow drains, and sewage odors can all point to a failing lateral even when the front yard looks fine.
How we evaluate the line
A sewer camera inspection shows corrosion, offsets, roots, and bellies. Hydro jetting may restore flow temporarily, but it cannot rebuild a pipe that has lost structural integrity.
When the pipe qualifies, trenchless CIPP lining rebuilds the interior without digging the yard. When it does not qualify, the inspection should define a traditional repair scope.
